Historic cooperation: Tongji University establishes German campus at Mediadesign University of Applied Science in Berlin

The Mediadesign Hochschule in Berlin and Tongji University in Shanghai have started a new co-operation. The opening of a Tongji Campus at mdh in Berlin marks an important step in German-Chinese educational relations.
A look at the history of Tongji University
Tongji University was founded in Shanghai in 1907 and began as the German Medical University. Just one year later, it was given the name ‘Tongji’ - a reference to the long tradition of Sino-German co-operation in education. Since then, Tongji University has developed into one of the most recognised universities in China.
Strengths in research and teaching
Tongji University is particularly strong in the fields of civil engineering and design:
- THE World University Rankings: 154th place worldwide
- Civil Engineering and Architecture: in the top 10 worldwide
- The School of Design and Innovation is one of the ten best design schools in the world
The new campus in Berlin offers the opportunity to contribute this expertise internationally.
A campus for collaboration
The campus will be used as a platform for intercultural dialogue and the exchange of knowledge. Regular academic conferences and joint research projects are planned. Tongji University can draw on its network of collaborations with German universities, which has existed for over 35 years, including with TU Berlin, TU Munich and Heidelberg University.
